Deborah Celebrates National Balance Awareness Week-Hosts “Balance Blitz” for the Public

Deborah Heart and Lung Center, is inviting the public to a “Balance Blitz” event on Sept. 23, from 2-4pm in the Winderman Auditorium. The event coincides with National Balance Awareness Week, and is designed to highlight the specialty balance services offered at the hospital’s Balance Center.

According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, balance is taken for granted. When the fragile vestibular organs of the inner ear are damaged by illness or injury, anyone can lose the ability to balance. Although many older people are afflicted with balance disorders -- resulting in balance-related falls accounting for more than one-half of accidental deaths, broken bones, and lengthy hospitalizations -- balance disorders affect every segment of the population. Dizziness, vertigo, and disequilibrium can all indicate a balance disorder.

At Deborah’s “Balance Blitz” attendees will be treated to an interesting, interactive afternoon of activities to assess balance health. Attendees can travel to six stations including an initial screening; a balance assessment; a blood pressure station that measures blood pressure lying down, sitting and standing; assess their “posturography” while standing on a balance plate; use the Wii with a vestibular rehab specialist; and check out a new balance video produced by Deborah, as well as get some important information about balance disorders.

Several of Deborah’s patients who have been successfully treated for balance disorders will also be on hand to share their stories, from confusion over their symptoms to amazement over their recovery once correctly assessed and treated.

“We are thrilled to bring the public to Deborah for an event that not only will be fun, but very informative,” said Dr. Marivi Ora-Cajulis, Deborah’s Medical Director of the Balance Center. “This is such an important issue for so many people, and they just don’t realize that what affects them is a vestibular problem. We hope that this afternoon will really shed light on the topic for many people.”

The event is free and refreshments will be provided. For groups of more than five, please call 1-800-555-1990. The event is September 23, from 2-4pm in the Winderman Auditorium at Deborah Heart and Lung Center on 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills.
