Deborah’s Dr. Raffaele Corbisiero the First in New Jersey to Implant New Heart Failure Device

Raffaele Corbisiero, M.D., Director of the Electromechanical Therapy Institute at Deborah Heart and Lung Center, and Chair, Electrophysiology, became the first physician in New Jersey, to implant the Unify Quadra cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) and Quartet Left Ventricular Quadripolar Pacing Lead.

This new pacing technology -- developed by St. Jude Medical -- received FDA approval on November 29, 2011, after extensive clinical trials at sites throughout the country, including Deborah.

This first quadripolar pacing system offers additional pacing options which can reduce the need for reoperation to reposition a lead, and physicians the ability to more efficiently and effectively manage the individualized needs of patients with heart failure.

Dr. Cobisiero implanted the first Unify Quadra CRT-D quadripolar pacing system to regulate and resynchronize the heartbeat of ninety-year-old Julius Shapiro of Manchester, New Jersey and Lake Worth, Florida. Shapiro has had a history of heart troubles since his late 70s, including a double-bypass, a silent heart attack with muscle damage, and two stents. His implant with the Unify Quadra CRT-D -- which offers the optimum in pacing capability -- is his first device, and he is hopeful that with this procedure he can begin taking walks again, and even working out on the treadmill and stationary bike in the gym, which he only stopped doing when he broke his ankle five months ago.

“This technology is the industry’s first quadripolar pacing system and Deborah is proud to be among the first hospitals in the country to implant this state-of-the-art device,” said Dr. Corbisiero.
