What Does Treatment with an ICD Feel Like?

When an ICD delivers therapy, you may not feel anything. Some feel a fluttering in their chest. They usually say that it's feel uncomfortable or painful.

Cardioversion is stronger than pacing pulse. It feels like being thumped in the chest.

The defibrillator shock is the strongest treatment. Many people say it feels like being kicked in the chest. It usually comes suddenly and lasts only a second. Although you may be upset for a short time after the shock, it is good to know that the ICD is treating your heart rhythm problem.

Pacing a slow heart rate uses very little energy. You may not feel it at all.

Will Anyone Notice if the ICD Delivers Treatment?

That all depends on the arrhythmia and the treatment delivered.

Plan ahead about what to do if your ICD delivers treatment. If your ICD sends a shock to your heart, find a quiet place to sit or lie down. Ask a family member or friend to stay with you until you feel better. Ask your doctor for exact instructions about whether you should call after a therapy is delivered. Also talk to your family and friends about what they can do to help you.
