Six Steps to a Healthier Heart
STEP
ONE
Do not smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products. No tobacco in any form is safe. |
STEP
TWO
Have your blood pressure checked regularly. If it's high, follow your doctor's advice on how to control it. |
STEP
THREE
Read food labels and eat foods low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Limit your saturated fat intake to 8-10 percent of your total calories or less. |
STEP
FOUR
Stay physically active. Thirty to sixty minutes of physical activity 3-4 times per week is all it takes to help your heart. Check with your doctor before starting an exercise program if you're middle aged or older, have not been physically active before and are planning a relatively vigorous exercise program. |
STEP
FIVE
Maintain the proper weight. If you're overweight, follow your physician's advice for a balanced, nutritious diet to help you loss the weight. Watch your calories as well as the amount of fat you eat. |
STEP
SIX
Have regular medical checkups. If you have diabetes or other medical problems, follow your doctor's advice to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. |
