Triple Generations
of Helping Hands
Bernard "Chip" Chiappone is no stranger to Deborah's hallways. Since 1982 he has had numerous procedures here-catheterizations, surgeries, stents and a pacemaker implant to name a few. He's also been an active volunteer since 1984, as a member of both the Zipper and Zapper Clubs. He's held hands, given advice and been an all-around support person for patients worried about surgery.

Chip's love of volunteering has trickled down to his daughter, Evelyn Richardson, who now comes in twice a month to help out. Adding to the family tradition is granddaughter, Jennifer Boyer, who as an aspiring nursing student is finding satisfaction and professional development in her volunteering.
For the trio, Deborah has become a routine part of their lives. According to Chip, the secrets to helping Deborah's patients are a sense of humor, a smile and compassion. "I feel good knowing that I've helped someone. I know their fears. I've been there," Chip said. It's good to feel helpful and useful," added Evelyn.
